I've been working on a lesson plan for the first graders tonight. They're going to use watercolors to paint exciting backgrounds and minimal subject matter.
I came up with the idea when I saw a first grader's multimedia painting on pinterest. It was oil pastel, watercolor and marker. I would link to it, but unfortunately the link took me to a blog where I couldn't find the picture or mention of it anywhere... So... Yeah... The web these days, am I right? What's really going on?
Anyways, what caught my attention was the vibrant background being the focus of the painting. And I immediately started thinking about my daughter, and how when she makes a piece of art, for the most part, it's all subject matter and foreground. So this art class was going to focus on background and how background can make a huge impact on your viewer.
I'm going to have the students use dots of colors to fill their entire page and then only black to paint their subject (flowers, however many they want, wherever they want).
Hopefully it will get the students to start thinking about how to fill the page when they are creating their own masterpieces.
You can see my example above. :-) Yes, I know, my talents are vast, I can paint like a first grader.
